Whistler is competing against cities from around the world for a prestigious Liveable Communities award.
The award, which is sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program, recognizes communities focused on environmental management and the creation of liveable places.
Whistler’s application was triggered in part by Whistler 2020, the planning document which hangs its hat on sustainability and The Natural Step. But that’s not the only reason, said Mike Vance, general manager of community initiatives.
"It’s not just Whistler 2020," he said. "It’s about a number of other things that the community in general is doing really well."
Vance points to Whistler’s transit system, its trail network and its park systems as a few of those factors which make the town a more liveable community.
This is the first time Whistler has applied for a LivCom award, only to find out that it was short-listed in the category of communities up to 20,000 people.
Whistler is up against nine other communities including: Amal, Sweden; Aylsham, England; Cuellar, Spain; Clonakilty, Ireland; Derwent Valley, Tasmania, Australia; Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, Northern Ireland; Okotoks, Canada, Tesetice, Czech Republic; and Trim Town, Ireland.
"To be chosen among an international community of leaders is an honour that we should be proud of, and a testament to the ongoing leadership, innovation and dedication of Whistler’s community members and organizations," said Vance.
The winner will be announced in Spain, Nov. 3 to 7. There, finalists will exchange best practices and practical experiences.
Three municipal employees will be representing Whistler at the awards ceremony.
