Whistler skiers heading to Canada Games

On Tuesday, B.C.'s complete athlete list for the Canada Games was announced, and Whistler athletes are well represented on the 350-strong Team B.C.

B.C. Alpine released its list of athletes for the 2011 Canada Winter Games several weeks ago with athletes aged 15 and 16 heading to hills outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia to take part in slalom, giant slalom and super combined races.

The women's team includes Whistler Mountain Ski Club athletes Kailee Darlington (also with B.C. Ski Team) and Emma King, as well as Alix Wells of Prince George, Silken Rauhala of Kelowna and Rebecca Bermel of Cranbrook.

The men's team includes WMSC skiers Broderick Thompson (now with B.C. Ski Team), Brodie Seger and Blake Ramsden, as well as Martin Grasic of Invermere and Peter Behncke of Revelstoke.

Whistler's Leslie Clarke and Nigel Loring, with the B.C. Ski Team and WMSC respectively, make up two-thirds of the team's coaching staff, with Scott Reid of Kimberley making up the other part.

The Para-Alpkine ski team includes Whistler skier Caleb Brousseau, and is coached by locals Phil Chew and Jason Fink.

In the sport of Freestyle, Whistler will be represented by Nicola Halliwell and Cassandra Sharpe, while Pemberton will be represented by Yuki Tsubota. Coaches Andrew Clough and Michael Shaw are also from Whistler.

In cross-country, the team includes Kasja Heyes and Geoffrey Richards, both skiers with the Callaghan Valley Training Centre. Christopher Manhard, the CVTC head coach, is one of three coaches with the group.

There were no locals with the snowboard team, but coaches include Whistler's Dan Raymond and Candice Drouin.

The Canada Winter Games run from Feb. 11 to 27. Other Whistler and Sea to Sky athletes could be named to represent the province in para-alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
