Whistler skiers lead Pontiac GMC Cup standings

After two events, Whistler skiers are on top of the Pontiac GMC Cup West Division standings.

Whistler’s Jennifer Bertram sits on top of the women’s standings with 1,250 points. Katie Fukushima of Canmore, Alberta is second with 900 and Emily Hamill of Calgary is third with 825.

Another Whistler skier, Rachel Walker, currently sits in fourth place with 765 points.

The overall tour leader for women is Brigitte Acton of Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, who swept the podiums last weekend to lead the way with 2,000 points. Emilie Desforges of Laval Quebec, is second overall with 1,380, while Bertram sits in third.

In the men’s West Division, Whistler skier Brian Bennett, who hails from Quesnel is in first place with 1,300 points. Trevor White and Dustin McLeay of Calgary sit in second and third with 1,200 and 1,050 respectively.

Whistler’s Robbie Dixon is tied for 10th in the standings with Tyler Harrison of Talkwa, B.C.

Bennett is also the top skier overall. Francois Bourque of New Richmond, Quebec is in second and White is third.

The Pontiac GMC Cup is a developmental race series for Canadians aspiring to compete at the World Cup level. It originally ran from 1969 to 1981, and was revived in 1998 to give Canadian skiers a high performance racing program. Some of the alumni of the race series include Steve Podborski, Ken Read, Laurie Graham and Kathy Kreiner.

The Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships will take place in Whistler from March 11 to 20.
