The North Shore Credit Union has announced that it will grant scholarships to two Whistler high school students based on their contributions to the Whistler Community.
In addition, both recipients demonstrated excellent academic achievement, sound leadership skills, and an inspiration to pursue higher education.
Geoff Mooney received a $1,500 Employee Award scholarship. In addition to taking part in intramural sports activities –badminton, hockey, soccer and basketball – Mooney has volunteered for several community events, including fund-raising for the Black Tusk Fire Department.
He is going to UBC next year, where he plans to major in cell biology and genetics.
"It’s awesome," Mooney said of the scholarship. "Now I’ll be able to pay for my education, or part of it anyway."
The Employee Award scholarship is granted to the son or daughter of a North Shore Credit Union employee, but the students still have to compete for it against other applicants.
Katherine Rybar received a $1,500 scholarship for her efforts. In addition to her participation in community events, Rybar led and directed school activities such as the yearbook, the 30-Hour Famine, and various student council activities. She also built and maintained the Whistler Community School Web site, and was chosen as a representative for Encounters Canada and Simon Fraser University Leadership Workshops.
Every year the NSCU awards four $1,500 scholarships and three $500 scholarships to six high school students from the Lower Mainland and Whistler.
