Whistler to get a lesson in working with Aboriginal people

The Whistler-Mount Currie Learning Communities Partnership will be conducting a workshop for local employers entitled Working Effectively with Aboriginal People.

The workshop concentrates on breaking down stereotypes, building relationships, understanding local First Nations history and culture, and providing key skills to work effectively with Aboriginal people.

A major objective of the Learning Communities project is developing and promoting the Mount Currie workforce and matching people to meaningful Whistler positions.

"There is a considerable lack of visibility of First Nations workers in this community and through this avenue we hope to change it," says Stephanie Wells, Whistler project co-ordinator.

"With a cultural centre opening in 2006 and First Nations culture so ingrained in the 2010 Games it is felt that this is a beginning in bridging gaps, developing solid relationships and sustaining both communities in terms of workforce development," said Wells. "We are excited to bring this program to Whistler employers, at no cost to them. We are looking for committed employers who will assist us in the stewardship of long-term relations and human resource development."

Whistler Chamber President Brent Leigh is also enthusiastic: "This is an excellent way for the employers of Whistler to develop a stable resource of trained employees."

The workshop will take place on July 6 at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce boardroom. Interested participants can register through Stephanie Wells at 604-932-5922 ext. 34.
