Whistler triathletes go off-roading

Local triathletes took it off-road on Saturday, Sept. 10 for the inaugural XTC Vancouver off-road triathlon.

In the past the event has been held as part of the Xterra Canada series, but this year organizers decided to break with Xterra, for financial reasons, and host their own race. There are also XTC events in Guelph and Campbell River, where other Xterra events were held in the past.

In the full course race – which included a 1.5 km swim on Buntzen Lake, a 24 km mountain bike ride on surrounding singletrack trails, and a 10 km trail run – Jason Simpson finished 15 th overall and fifth in the 35 to 39 age category with a time of 2:59:59. Mike Tunnah finished 18 th overall and second in the 30 to 34 category with a time of 3:10:24. Grace Blok was second in the women’s 50 to 54 category and 32 nd overall in 3:57:59.

In the short course race – 750 metre swim, 12 km bike and 5 km run – Tory Younger won the 25 to 29 age category and was sixth overall in 1:52:22. Nathalie Morel was seventh overall and second in the women’s 30 to 34 race in 1:54:01. Yolanda Foose was 17 th and fourth in the women’s 25 to 29 group in 2:09:37, while Karen Osburg was 20 th overall and sixth in the same category with her time of 2:14:39.
