Whistler triathletes in Summerland, Vancouver

Just one week after competing in Ironman, some of Whistler’s top athletes were in action in Summerland on Aug. 31 for a sprint triathlon. A sprint triathlon is a 750 metre swim, a 19.8 km bike and a 5 km run.

Paul Suter, who qualified for the World Ironman Championships a week earlier at the Penticton Ironman, completed the race in just 1:05:27. He finished seventh overall, and first in the men’s 40 to 49 age group.

His wife Christine Suter, who also competed in Penticton, finished 13 th overall and first in the women’s 30 to 39 age category in 1:09:19.

Char Riess finished 76 th overall and eighth out of 11 women in the 40 to 49 age group with a time of 1:25:29.

Garth Riess, her husband, was 97 th in 1:39:58.

Kai Riess, racing in the shorter men’s 10 and 11 age group, was 13 th overall and 10th among boys in 43:17 after a 150 metre swim, a 9.7 km bike and a 2 km run.

The Vancouver Triathlon, which includes both Olympic and Sprint Distance races, also took place on Sept. 1, attracting almost 400 competitors.

In the Olympic event, which includes a 1.5 km swim, a 38.8 km bike and a 10 km run, Daniel Havens was the top Whistler athlete. Havens, another Ironman competitor, finished 35 th overall out of more than 280 racers with a time of 2:23:28. He was also fifth in the men’s 45 to 49 age group.

Marie-Anne Prevost was 74 th overall in 2:32:31, and second in the women’s 30 to 34 category.

Kevin Smith was 86 th in 2:33:30, and 15 th in the men’s 30 to 34 group.

Sandy Treaggus was 90 th in 2:34:02, and was 15 th in the men’s 35 to 39 bracket.

Dan Fraser was 236 th in 3:05:57, and 29 th in the men’s 25 to 29 category.

Christie McJannet was 244 th in 3:10:29, and was 16 th in the women’s 25 to 29 category.

In the sprint triathlon, Jody Wright was the top Whistler athlete, finishing 29 th overall and fifth in the women’s 20 to 24 group with a time of 1:24:02.

Megan Wastle was 35 th and fourth in the women’s 25 to 29 race in 1:25:06.

Lisa Powell was 41 st , finishing sixth among the 20 to 24’s and 41 st overall in 1:26:52.

The triathlon season continues in North Vancouver on Sept. 14 with a Diva’s Only Triathlon, which is limited to female entrants.
