Whistler User-Pay Parking Workshops on July 5 and July 19

Meeting open to public but no opportunity for participation

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) will host two council workshops in July as part of an engagement process to assist the Whistler Village Day Skier Lot Operating Committee to establish Whistler Village Day Lot parking rates by September  2011.

Pay parking has been part of Whistler's fiscal, transportation and sustainability plans for decades. At the June 21, 2011 council meeting, council endorsed a consultative and engagement process to review the rate structure for Day Lots 1-5.

A professional parking manager has been hired on contract to help facilitate the process; lead two council workshops with partner and community representatives; as well as assist with community and visitor surveying.

The first workshop will take place on July 5, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Maurice Young Millennium Place, 4335 Blackcomb Way, Whistler, BC. It will be facilitated by David Hill, a parking professional with experience throughout North America who will assist in finding solutions to the Village Day Skier Parking Lot challenge, Hill is a Certified Administrator of Public Parking. His experience includes:

  • work for universities throughout North America;
  • operating a parking technology firm; and
  • working as founding CAO of the Winnipeg parking authority.

Hill's work has resulting in awards from multiple professional organizations as well as the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and the Winnipeg Business Improvement Association. He is an industry leader in addressing parking challenges and the application of technology in the parking industry.

RMOW council, representatives from Tourism Whistler, Whistler Chamber of Commerce, Business Enhancement Committee, Transportation Advisory Group, W2020 Transportation Task Force, Day Skier Parking Lot Operating Committee will attended these workshops. Participants will bring existing research and feedback to the discussion, provide an overview of parking rate structures previously explored by Operating Committee, and explore rate options.

A second workshop will take place on July 19, 2011, where the public survey results will be presented. These council workshops are open to the public to attend; however there will not be an opportunity for participation.

More information about the process will be finalized following the first workshop.
