Whistler volleys to second and third

Whistler volleyballers second and third

Whistler’s two women’s volleyball teams took on five teams from the Lower Mainland last Saturday in the Volleyball B.C. provincial series competition. The all-day tournament took place at Whistler Secondary, and was hosted by the Whistler Wildwood team.

The team to beat was Shadow, a veteran team with a couple of strong, young players. Shadow finished second in the nationals championships and fourth in the World Masters Championships.

The day started off with pool play. The Whistler Whoosh Women’s Volleyball Team finished first in their pool of four teams, before going on to face a team of veteran UBC players in the semi-finals called Vintage Thunder. Whoosh won that game, advancing to the final against tournament champions Shadow.

Meanwhile the Whistler Wildwood team made it through the pool play in fourth place, and faced Shadow in the semi-finals. They lost in two straight games, but held their own in the consolation game to finish third in the tournament.

Both the Whoosh and Wildwood will compete in the provincial series through the winter with tournaments every month through spring. The next tournament is on Nov. 20 in Vancouver.

Team Whoosh includes Mairi Smith, Melanie Bernier, Karine Serra, Olga Achiardi, Su Oliver, Myrna Iaconnett-Bush, Shelley Leddingham. Kat Frew and coach Bill Sirota.

Team Wildwood includes Laura Wetaski, Sue Eckersley, Julie Rockwell, Wanda Chalk, Carolann Shiner, and Georgina Titus, who came out of retirement for the tournament. Titus was filling in for team members Maeghan Thomas and Kirsten Homeniuk, who were out of town and injured, respectively.
