Awards of $5,000 through a campaign by Alpine Initiatives (AI) are up for grabs for a mountain project in North America and Whistler is on the short list.
AI is a non-profit organization that says it engages the snow sports community in sustainable initiatives. To that end, the organization is offering grants of $5,000 to three projects proposed for mountain communities in a competition it has named Grass Roots Grants.
The Whistler Centre for Sustainability (WCS) is hoping to get enough votes to win the $5,000 to be used for the creation of a self-directed walking and biking tour showcasing Whistler’s many sustainability successes, which have been developed by a number of local organizations. The proposal vision includes a downloadable podcast, a map and video clips telling the story of each success.
Cheeying Ho, executive director of the WCS, is leading the effort and calling on supporters to cast votes for the Whistler proposal through a Facebook poll.
“We are thrilled to have been selected as one of the six finalists,” said Ho through a news release. “Whistler is a leader in sustainability due to the innovative and committed work of many organizations and businesses in our community. We have a lot to be proud of and many success stories to share and showcase, and by doing so Whistler can help to raise awareness and inspire others to act.”
Details of the Whistler project proposal can be found AI’s Facebook page along with details of competing projects in Burlington, Park City, Steamboat Springs, Crested Butte and Aspen.
The three projects with the highest number of Facebook votes at midnight on April 2 will be awarded $5,000 by AI.
