The Whoosh and Unamaus women’s volleyball teams travelled to the Harry Jerome Centre in Burnaby on Sunday to compete in the Tier I, II and III season opener.
With a total of 14 teams entered in the tournament, the teams faced some tough competition in the round robin, and a full day of volleyball.
Whoosh played well against three consistent teams, the UBC junior varsity team, Fusion and Taboo, in pool play, and ended the round robin in fourth place in their pool. As a result they were relegated down to the Tier II bracket, where they hit their stride.
In the first game of the playoffs, Whoosh took on Unamus, another Whistler team. It was a close match that went to three games, but in the end Whoosh took the win advancing into the semi-finals.
Whoosh was then matched up against a tall, young SFU team, but teamwork and determination earned them the win.
Moving into the finals, Whoosh met up with Fusion once again. Whoosh took Fusion to three games, but ended up losing 18-25, 25-12, 8-15.
Overall, after nine hours of volleyball, Whoosh was happy with their second place Tier II finish. They hope to build upon this at their next tournament on Dec. 6.
Whoosh were helped along by hustle on defense by Olga Archiadi and Kylie Spicer, super serving by Myrna Iaconetti and strong hitting and blocking by Veronica Voracek and Kat Frew. Sue Oliver and Carlee Howell set consistently throughout the tournament. The team would like to thank Coach Bill Sirota for all his help and support.
