Whistler.com re-launches website

Whistler.com has re-launched its updated website.

Tourism Whistler launched the first phase of Whister.com's redesign on Oct. 5. The site now leans heavily on the "Whistler experience," utilizing photography of the Whistler life that is given prominence throughout the homepage.

Featured events have also be given more prominence to encourage more visits to the resort, while the hotel booking section has been moved from the centre of the page to a side bar.

"Visually, it's more about the whole experience of Whistler but yet we still want to make it so it's not difficult for people to come and book a room," said Arlene Schieven, vice president of marketing at Tourism Whistler. "When you first come on, it's going to be, 'Oh wow, this is Whistler.'"

Tourism Whistler will roll out the completed website in three phases, with the final product set to be completed by the end of 2010. New features will include an events database, interactive trail maps and a blog for visitors to Whistler.

Tourism Whistler had been utilizing social media through Twitter and Facebook but now they will integrate it into the website.

"We have a whole new social share-and-experience section on the website that's going to be much more about the customer sharing their experiences, photo and video galleries and that sort of thing," Schieven said.

The visitor-targeted website will also have some appeal for locals, particularly the events database.

Schieven said the new site will also include a more robust weather forecasting section that will have a seven-day outlook, as well as updated snow and trail conditions.

"We don't want to replicate what other people are already doing but that's what we have identified," she said. "Nordic, for example, what trails are open? We'll have a featured trail of the day and a link right to their snow conditions and perhaps have a web cam. We'd see a similar thing for the hiking trails throughout the valley."
