Whistler residents can learn more about what’s in store this year for the Cheakamus Community Forest (CCF) at an open house scheduled for Monday, Feb. 1.

“I encourage Whistler residents, and Cheakamus Crossing residents in particular, to attend this meeting to learn about the Cheakamus Community Forest and harvesting plans for this year and the coming years in the vicinity of your neighbourhood, and to bring any questions that they might have for the Community Forest partners,” said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release.

At the meeting, forest partners will share details on proposed harvest plans for 2016, particularly in the Cheakamus Valley; both short-term (one to three years) and long-term (four to 10 years) harvest plans; as well as wildfire management efforts.

Harvesting plans were originally presented at a Nov. 25 open house and are available for viewing online at www.cheakamuscommunityforest.com/maps-and-harvesting-plans.

Included in the harvest plans is Cheakamus 16 block, located southwest of the Cheakamus Crossing quarry. Road building for the site is expected to begin in March, with harvesting taking place in April and May and hauling from May to June. Trucks will access the site from Highway 99 and then Cheakamus Lake Road.

Additional traffic is expected beginning this spring with trucks accessing Jane Lake Road, which may result in some noise and dust, the RMOW said. Work is currently underway to minimize the impacts on neighbourhood residents and recreationalists who use Jane Lake Road to access the Sea to Sky Trail and mountain bike trails.

The open house will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in Cheakamus Crossing at the Whistler Hostel meeting room. Presentations on the proposed harvesting plans will take place at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
