Whoosh battle for bronze

The Whistler Whoosh women’s volleyball team got off to a strong start on Sunday in the first B.C. Volleyball Association tournament of the season.

With 13 teams in the tournament, including the top teams from the Lower Mainland, the Whoosh knew they had their work cut out for them.

They got off to a shaky start, splitting games with team Red Hot and losing to the UBC Junior Varsity team to finish third in their pool. As a result they were dropped to the Tier II bracket, where they caught their stride. They beat Go Deep in two games, then split a pair of games with Unamus, another Whistler team.

Moving into the playoffs, Whoosh split the first two games with Simon Fraser University, then won the tie-breaker. Advancing to the semi-finals, Whoosh faced Red Hot once again, splitting the first two matches and losing the decider to finish third overall in the Tier II bracket.

Olga Achiardi and Raelene Vandenbosch provided the defence, Mairi Smith and Mel Bernier supplied the hitting and blocking, while Sue Oliver, Myrna Laconetti Bush and Carlee Howell were the setters.
