Whoosh third in first tier

The Whistler Whoosh women’s volleyball team had their best tournament of the season last Saturday in Burnaby, moving up to the top tier after pool play and finishing third against some of the top teams in the province.

The Frostbite Rally tournament was hosted by the B.C. Volleyball Association, with 10 teams taking part.

Whoosh split their first series against Shadow, a veteran team, then went on to lose two straight to Paradise Cover from Victoria. The Whoosh met another Whistler team in their third game, winning both games to finish second in their pool.

In the first round of the playoffs, Whoosh beat Wildfire, another team out of Victoria after going to a third game, advancing to Tier I of the playoffs. They ended up losing their next game to a team called Blue Crush in two games, but still finished third overall.

The Whoosh is made up of Olga Achiardi, Veronika Voracek, Carlee Howell, Karine Serra, Mairi Smith, Mel Bernier, Sue Oliver and Myrna Iaconetti Bush.

The next tournament is on Feb. 5 in Victoria.
