One night not too long ago at the Pemberton Hotel Jarrett Henn, co-owner of eclectic Mount Currie restaurant the Wild Seed Enoteca, bore witness to a display of awe-inspiring talent.
No, it wasn’t amateur stripper night. It was mechanical bull night. And 21-year-old Mount Currie local Marlon Williams was holding his own against the machine set on top speed to the cheers of a very impressed crowd.
The local cowboy’s skills come from riding flesh and blood bulls in the corral and there isn’t a rodeo enthusiast around these parts that doesn’t know it.
Williams finished the 2003 rodeo season ranked No.2 as a bull rider in his regional Western Indian Rodeo & Exhibition Association, which meant he qualified for the Indian National Finals Rodeo in San Jacinto California last October.
It’s a new season now and Williams has another qualifying year ahead if he wants to make it back to San Jacinto. But like all top-level competitive sports, pro-rodeo isn’t cheap. A bull rider needs tough gear and travel funds and the odd trip to the chiropractor.
Displaying good neighbourly spirit, Henn and Wild Seed partners Glenn Brubaker and Keith Byers are hosting an event to raise money for Williams’ upcoming competitive season this Thursday, May 20.
The Wild Seed’s Pre-Rodeo Roundup fundraiser has been scheduled to fall right before the Lillooet Lake Rodeo on the long weekend. Things kick off in the afternoon with a bison and salmon burger barbecue, followed by carnival games and tunes by Pemberton duo Greasy Jack ’n’ Julie, local band 4Q2 and more.
Brubaker says the barbecue will kick off at approximately 2 p.m. with the music starting in the evening. Tickets are $10 available in advance and on the day of the event at the Wild Seed.
