Although he didn’t finish with the lead pack, the 21-year-old stayed near the front of the second group and finished the day in a three-way tie for sixth place out of 70 racers with his time of three hours, 37 minutes and 37 seconds.
Two of his teammates from Symmetrics Cycling, Andrew Pinfold and Marsh Cooper, tied for the top spot with times of 3:35:15. Third place went to Derek McMaster of Team Coastal, who finished just two seconds behind. Symmetrics riders Cameron Evans and Sven Tuft also finished fourth and fifth with times of 3:36:11 and 3:37:36.
"That was pretty good for the provincial championships," said Routley. "I’m more happy that we took the win because it is a team sport pretty much, and we pretty much dominated in this event and in the Bastion (Square Grand Prix) crit the next day.
Routley’s biggest test of the season is the Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce in Quebec next week, a seven-stage race that runs from June 15 to 20 th . The race is one of the most challenging in North America, with the most UCI points on the line. As a result it draws the top teams from the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well as teams from Europe and South America.
Following the Beauce race, Routley has his sights set on the national road championships, where he hopes to earn a berth in the worlds.
He is also continuing to race mountain bikes, and will take part in the Calgary World Cup event in late June and the mountain bike nationals in mid-July. He is hoping to once again join the national team for the World Mountain Bike Championships in September.
