Seattle's Christan Leonard, Bowen Island's Bernice Lever and Whistler's Julie Farr are winners in the first Comedy Quickies competition at the Whistler Writers Festival.
"It went beyond our wildest expectations and that's because of the immense talent of the participating writers and the amazing local actors who brought their ideas to life. We could not have been more grateful for the opportunity to showcase Whistler's blossoming creative community," says co-organizer Brandon Barrett.
Winner of Best Writing Award, decided by a panel of judges, was Seattle comedian Leonard. She took home approximately $1,000 in cash and prizes.
And winners of the Best Act Award, as voted by the audience, were writer Bernice Lever from Bowen Island, and Whistler's Julie Farr, who performed Lever's monologue. They split $500 in prizes.
Film festival call for artists
The Whistler Film Festival (WFF) is seeking 15 Sea to Sky visual artists for a showcase gallery as part of its celebration during the 15th annual festival from Dec. 2 to 6.
Painters, photographers, potters, sculptors and others are welcome to apply for the WFF Artist Gallery, which will be housed at Festival Lodge, a new hub for the event located in the Whistler Conference Centre.
WFF would also like to feature saleable items such as cards and prints. The pieces will be available for sale, with proceeds to benefit the artists and the Whistler Film Festival Society.
The gallery will be managed by Penny Eder of the White Dog Creative Curator Group. Artist application is by Monday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m.

Whistler Music Search finalists announced
Five finalists have been announced for the 2015 Whistler Music Search, which took place at The Crystal Lounge on three nights in October.Vying for cash and prizes are Milan Martin, Eric Van Meerbergen and James Gray, who all won their rounds — and two wildcards, Braden Dupuis and Emily Molloy.
They perform at the Crystal on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 9 p.m.
Last year's winner, Will Ross, and hip hop artist Lozen, joins judges Cathryn Atkinson, Jonathan Baum and Steve Clark to choose a winner.
New artist co-op holding open house
Mountain ObjectMakers Co-operative is holding an open house at their Function Junction unit.
The open house is at #12-1005 Alpha Like Road, behind Home Hardware, on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
The co-op has six artist studios, creating handmade functional and art objects in glass, clay and metal jewelry.
The co-op came together to share affordable studio space. There are up to two spots available for membership at $200 to $355 per month. Co-op membership is $25.
