Her legacy lives on in the passion of two young skiers of today.
The Sarah Burke Foundation has announced its 2019 Up and Coming scholarship winners.
Squamish's Burke, a trailblazing Canadian freestyle skier, died in a training accident on Jan. 19, 2012. Since 2013, the foundation in her name has honoured young athletes who show promise in their sport, and who embody Burke's enthusiasm and generous spirit.
The winners, who were announced Jan. 6, each receive a $7,500 scholarship.
This year's winners are Jessie Linton, 17, who skis at Penticton's Apex Mountain Resor, and Charlie Beatty, 12, of Ontario.
Linton is a member of the BC Mogul Team and is on the current NorAm Circuit. She placed 10th at Junior Worlds, the highest-ranking Canadian woman.
"I want to push the boundaries in women's skiing and carry on [Sarah's] legacy," Linton is quoted as saying in the foundation's announcement of the winners.
Beatty is the current halfpipe and slopestyle Canadian Junior champion and, like Burke, he grew up skiing at Horseshoe Valley Resort.
"Just because no one has done it, doesn't mean it can't be done. Sarah's legacy was to motivate people to achieve their dreams and she has done that for me," Beatty said.
