WMSC proposes employee housing An apartment building that would house 160 Whistler Mountain employees in the Twin Lakes area could be built in time for the 1996-97 ski season. Municipal staff is reviewing a proposal that would see Whistler Mountain build a 46-suite apartment building and a private developer create market housing on seven acres behind Les Deux Gros Restaurant. The proposal includes Whistler Mountain transferring 40 bed units to the land owners, Ross Depner and Judy Higginson, for a two-acre portion of the site where the apartment building would be built. Depner would develop a low-density lodge project with the 40 bed units he receives from Whistler Mountain and the six bed units attached to the property. If the project goes ahead the 160 employee bed units built by Whistler Mountain would likely not be counted against the lift company’s total. Mayor Ted Nebbeling suggested that if Whistler Mountain has to give up some of its market bed units for employee housing that would be a very high price. Municipal staff will come back to council with a report on the proposal.
