All abilities invited to participate in Whistler's women's hockey league this fall.

The Whistler Women’s Hockey League is looking for women of all ages and experience levels interested in playing organized hockey this winter.

At minimum players are expected to know how to skate and stop, and the rules of the sport, but the league’s need is so great that enthusiasm and a willingness to learn by taking part in drop-in hockey may be all you need to make a team.

The league is hosting its annual draft on Thursday, Sept. 13 from 8:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All participants should have full gear and a stick, and should be ready to skate drills and play in a skirmish. Following the on-ice play, teams will draft participants based on their record from the following season.

If you would like to take part in the draft contact league coordinator Christine Kenny at chrisk27@hotmail.com or 604-935-3145 to pre-register. The league would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in playing but can’t make the draft night.

“We need a minimum of 20 women for our league to survive this year,” said Kenny. “One team needs eight players, my team needs six right now. There’s only one team out there that needs just one player to have the minimum, but in total we need about 20 players just to get the season going. If we can get more than 20, that would be great.

“We’re looking for all abilities, all attitudes, and we need people who want to develop, and are willing to put the time in and get to drop-in if they need to.”

The cost of taking part in the draft is $10 to cover the ice rental. The team with the worst record from last season will get the first two picks from the pool of candidates, and so on until every team has filled its roster for the season.

Meadow Park arena is already open for drop-in hockey. There will be coached drop-in hockey on Wednesday nights from 8:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. from Sept. 3 to 26, and from 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesday, Sept. 5 to 26, which will be followed by novice drop-in hockey.
