Women’s hockey stars clash on Friday

B.C. Breakers take on Calgary Oval Extreme in season opener

Friday is hockey night in Whistler, as minor hockey prepares to host some of the top women’s teams in a replay of last year’s almost sold-out game.

The Calgary Oval Extreme won that contest with a lineup that included three of Canada’s top scorers from the 2002 Winter Games and national team, but the B.C. Breakers are getting a lot stronger. Led by Team USA captain Cammi Granato and goalie Jennifer Price, one of the top candidates to backstop the Canadian team in the 2006 Winter Games, the Breakers are hoping to start their season with a win.

Calgary will be difficult to stop with players like Hayley Wickenheiser and Cassie Campbell on the roster again, but it’s early in the season and anything can happen.

The doors open at Meadow Park arena at 6 p.m., and the game gets underway at 6:30 p.m. The arena was close to capacity for the game with over 520 tickets sold, and organizers are expecting another strong turnout this year – the NHL may be back but it’s also an Olympic year.

The cost is $12 for adults and $10 for kids 7-17. Kids six an under are free. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Whistler Minor Hockey Association, as well as the proceeds from the 50/50 draw, silent auction, puck toss and tickets from the WHMA’s cruise raffle.

The money will be used to fund training programs for WHMA coaches and hire power skating and goalie coaches for minor hockey players.
