Only Canadians would put an ice rink in the middle of a ski area at 6,065 feet. With all the snow falling this week, workers have had their hands full shovelling it out, but it was a labour of love.

Now that it’s built, the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation and RBC Financial Group are inviting the public to meet members of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team – including three members of the gold medal team from the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

The confirmed athletes are Cassie Campbell of Brampton, Ontario; Danielle Goyette of St-Nazaire, Quebec; Correne Bredin of Warburg, Alberta; and, if she has recovered from illness, Hayley Wickenheiser of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.

The action will start at 12:30 p.m. as the national team members hold a skills competition with students from Myrtle Philip Community School.

That event will be followed by a game of shinny between members of the media and members of the women’s hockey team at 1:45 p.m.

In between and afterwards there will be an opportunity for members of the public to meet the players and maybe get a few autographs.

The event is being held to promote Vancouver’s bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics and the LegaciesNow program to foster future Olympic champions.
