WORCA kicks off 20th birthday celebrations

The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association turns 20 this year - Feb. 27 in fact - as the current board kicks off a celebration that will continue through the year.

The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association turns 20 this year - Feb. 27 in fact - as the current board kicks off a celebration that will continue through the year.

Original board members have been invited to take part in the launch at Dusty's with a cake at 8 p.m. following the annual date fixing meeting for the 2009 Loonie Race season.

Other events being planned include a logo contest for a commemorative jersey, special races, social gatherings, and a film on WORCA's history.

WORCA first cut its teeth as an advocacy group, as local mountain bikers fought to retain access to certain trails in Garibaldi Provincial Park. While they have so far been unsuccessful in restoring bike access to Singing Pass and Rubble Creek, the group has successfully lobbied to protect trails through the Whistler area.

The mandate of the association also broadened over the years to include trail maintenance - more than $60,000 spent last year - as well as Loonie races, youth programs, skills development, trail planning and other activities. Membership has topped 1,000 for each of the past five years, making WORCA the biggest mountain bike club in the world.

More information on other 20th anniversary events will be available in the coming weeks, following the official birthday celebration.
