WORCA is hosting the first of two trail sweep days on Saturday, May 16, meeting at the Riverside Café at 8 a.m. for a pancake breakfast. From there volunteers will divide into crews that will walk local trails and move rocks, prune back vegetation and report any serious obstacles like downed trees or water damage.
The sweep usually takes about two to three hours. Bring your gardening shears or portable saws and be sure to dress for the weather and the job. Gardening gloves are recommended but old bike gloves work as well, and you're responsible for bringing your own food or water.
After the sweep volunteers should send detailed trail reports through the WORCA website, www.worca.com.
The second trail sweep is the following Saturday, May 23, meeting at the same time and place.
Over the course of the season WORCA is also planning several trail work days and evenings to support specific trail projects. More information will be sent to members by e-mail and posted on the website.
Art workshops provide Toonie Ride child-minding
The Orkidz Art Studio in Function Junction (next to the Cracked Pepper) is hosting a special Toonie Ride art class tonight (May 14) for kids aged four to 10. Parents can drop off kids at 6 p.m., ride the annual "Tour de Trash" Toonie, then pick up their children at 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per child, with a limit of 10 kids.

The Tour de Trash takes place tonight, Thursday, May 14. Registration is at the Cascade Environmental Research Group building behind Home Hardware with sign-on at 5:30 p.m. The race starts at 6:30 p.m. and the après is at Zog's headquarters in Function Junction.
The May 21 Toonie Ride is sponsored by Wild Willies and the Longhorn Saloon, with sign-on at 5:30 p.m. at Spruce Grove Field House and the après at the Longhorn.
Dirt camps selling out quickly
All of WORCA's youth dirt camps for kids aged 6 to 9 are full, but there are still spaces available for older kids. Registration will be limited to locals until the end of the month, then will be opened to the general public.
Registration is online through the WORCA website, and parents will need the following:
• Valid WORCA memberships for each participant, which are available online.
• Family doctor's name and phone number.
• Date of most recent tetanus shot.
• Medical insurance number and effective dates.
• Emergency contact name and number.
• Names and numbers of persons authorized to pick up campers.
