The seventh Workers Cup raised $1,500 for the Worker’s Cup Society April 25 on Whistler Mountain. Twelve teams braved an April blizzard to face the race course, which included completing a couple of trades-related tasks and skiing or snowboarding down a giant slalom course. The team winner was Buffalo Bill’s Deuce, with a combined time of 10 minutes, 38.09 seconds. Whistler Glass was second in 11: 56.64 and the Longhorn third in 12:32.77. The fastest woman was Inge Flanagan in 2:23.31, while Scott Musgrave was the fastest man in 1:58.48. Originally a race for trades people in the valley, the Worker’s Cup is now open to all. The Worker’s Cup Society uses funds raised to support Whistler workers or their families in times of emergency. The fund is not a replacement for unemployment insurance or Workers Compensation, but to assist people in a situation where their needs are beyond their means. In addition to the $1,500 raised through entry fees, Molson Canada donated $2,000 to the society. The event was supported by Whistler Mountain, Buffalo Bill’s, Molson and the Whistler Question. Money was also raised through an auction at the post-race banquet at Buffalo Bill’s. Nesters Market, Gibbons Hospitality Group, Whistler Golf Club, Molson Canada/Indy, Sabre Transport and Columbia Brewing contributed items for the auction.
