The first of two snowboardcross events wrapped up today (Thursday, Dec. 8), but if you missed it there are still three opportunities to see Canada’s top snowboarders take on the world in the Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup in Whistler this weekend.
In total over 250 athletes from 20 countries are taking part, as one of the last opportunities to meet the International Olympic Committee’s criteria for qualification for February’s Torino Olympics.
For athletes that have already qualified, it’s also an opportunity to win points towards the overall standings, as well as a share of prize money. The equivalent of 25,000 Swiss Francs (about $22,123 Canadian) will be awarded for each event. With two genders competing in four events, the total prize purse for the weekend is $200,000 Swiss Francs or approximately $177,000 Canadian. The money is divided among the top-10.
