After a disappointing showing at the World Alpine Ski Championships in Austria and the loss of Emily Brydon due to a knee injury, the Canadian team got off to a slow start at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany World Cup.
Melanie Turgeon’s ninth in the super-G on Feb. 16 was the highlight of the weekend. It was her eighth top-10 finish in what has been a solid season for the 24 year old from Beauport, Quebec, but she slipped from fourth to fifth in the overall super-G standings as a result. She held onto the 13 th position in the overall standings.
Carole Montillet of France won the race, her first World Cup gold ever, edging Renate Goetschl of Austria by 0.01 seconds. Austria’s Brigitte Obermoser was third.
On the previous day, Allison Forsyth of Nanaimo, 22, finished 18 th in the slalom. Forsyth is currently 25 th in the overall World Cup points standings.
Croatia’s Janica Kostelic won the slalom, followed by Christel Asioni of France and Karin Koellerer of Austria.
