WRA votes June 13 New election format at AGM The Whistler Resort Association returns to convention-style voting at its annual general meeting, Saturday, June 13, to elect its board of directors. In the past few years, WRA members were able to mail in nominations and then their ballots to fill open board spots. But with just 24 of 4,000-plus members attending the last AGM, the WRA seeks to increase participation by the now 5,000 members. "Participation (in the elections process) did not increase in line with increases in membership," says Craig MacKenzie of the WRA. Casting ballots the lazy man's way was costly, too. The procedure cost $50,000 to send out three mailings to solicit nominations and then the ballots, and to pay the accounting firm hired to count the ballots fairly. The AGM should take just two hours to run through, MacKenzie says of the 9 a.m. start. The agenda includes a look at the past year's financial statement and what is expected of the coming year. WRA departments also make a wrap-up presentation. Nominees have to be in attendance to accept their nomination to one of four board positions available this year: single-owner hotel, hotel lodging, non-hotel lodging and director-at-large. Members can only vote for the directorship for their category, but all members can vote for the at-large post. Three directorships come up for election at next year's AGM.
