A Whistler Secondary School (WSS) cross-country athlete recently impressed at provincials.

Competing in the 2015 B.C. High School X-Country Championships at Jericho Beach Park in the junior boys' division, Grade 8 runner Skylar Beauregard placed 71st overall and fifth among all Grade 8 boys. Beauregard completed the course in a time of 20 minutes and 43 seconds (20:43), just over three minutes off the winning pace set by Earl Marriott's Jaxon Mackie (17:41).

Reynolds Secondary's Kalum Delaney was less than a second behind Mackie, while Nechako Valley Secondary's Simon Nemethy placed third.

Whistler Gymnastics holding open house

The message behind RBC Sports Day in Canada is to be inclusive to all.

It's a mantra Oros Whistler Gymnastics Centre has taken to heart, and the public is invited to visit the club at the Whistler Athletes' Centre as part of the nationwide event.

The open house will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at the centre, located at 1090 Legacy Way in Cheakamus Crossing on Nov.14.

Marketing coordinator Corley McElwain explained people could come see the gymnasts perform and then give the equipment a go themselves.

"They're doing a bit of a show at 12, and then until 3 p.m. our gym is open for anyone in the community to come and play," she said. "You can see the equipment, use it, go in the foam pit, try the trampolines and be engaged in gymnastics."

There will also be a bake sale to raise money for the non-profit group.

Sea to Sky Nordics is also hosting an event related to Sports Day, inviting those interested in biathlon to come to Whistler Olympic Park between 10 a.m. and noon on Nov. 21 to give the sport a shot.

Fitness classes coming to Whistler Athletes' Centre

Whistler Sport Legacies is welcoming the public to get fit at its facilities.

The organization opened up its schedule to the public earlier this month, hosting TRX suspension training classes, spin classes, circuit training and personal training.

The classes are held in the Whistler Athletes' Centre's new Performance Hub from Monday through Friday.

In a release, WSL vice-president of sport Lucinda Jagger explained there had been requests to invite others into the centre and she was glad to find a way to oblige.

"We looked into options and found a way to convert a multi-purpose room on the second floor of the High Performance Training Centre into a new gym space," Jagger explained.

More information on the classes is available at www.whistlersportlegacies.com/venues/whistler-athletes-centre/performance-hub-fitness-classes.

World Cup slalom cancelled

Warm weather has wiped out FIS racing in Finland.

The men's and ladies' slalom was slated to run Nov. 14 and 15, but unseasonable weather forced the races' cancellation.

Janne Pelkonen, the event's general secretary, regretted the cancellation.

"At Levi we have one of the most efficient snowmaking systems available and also well experienced crew. If the weather would have given us a chance to make the Levi Black ready, we would have done that. The weather didn't give us the opportunity this year," Pelkonen said in a release.

The FIS alpine season will resume with women's races in Aspen, Colo. and men's action in Lake Louise, Alta. on Nov. 28.
