The six-race Yeti Mountain Snowshoes Series wrapped up on Whistler Mountain last week with another successful and well-attended event.

In its second year, The Yeti races feature 5 km and 10 km courses in the high alpine with long climbs and tricky descents.

Previous races were held at Mount Washington, Silver Star, Mount Seymour, Sun Peaks and Cypress Mountain.

A field of 74 racers turned up to the Whistler competition, with most of the racers in the 10 km event.

The race started at the base of Whistler before proceeding up the EZ Does It trail in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. From there the route was downhill on A-Line to B-Line to the finish line.

In the women’s open category, the top time belonged to Carey Sather from Cultis Lake, who was racing for Team Atlas. She finished the 10 km course in a time of 57 minutes and 49 seconds, and was 11 th overall out of 58 racers doing the longer course.

Annie Kvick from the Rec Group team finished exactly one minute later.

In third place was Rachel Brown from Team Atlas. She finished in 59:45.

In the masters category there were just three racers. Sally Marcellus of Club Smart Ass led the way with a time of 1:05:05, followed by her teammate Gail Bazeley in 1:13:08. Brenda Withers was third in 1:21:50.

In the men’s open category the top time went to Andrew Clarke of Squamish, who was also racing for Team Atlas. He was the first overall and first in his category with a time of 50:19.

Justin Mark, running as an individual, was second in 51:47.

Third went to Dave Cressman of Team Atlas with a time of 52:42.

In the masters category, the top racer was Randy Nelson of Kamloops who was second overall with a time of 51:18 while racing for Runners Sole.

Second went to Rob Lang of Club Smart Ass in 53:17, and third to David Currie of Team Atlas in 58:14.

In the 50 and Over race Willi Ribbi of the Rec Group had the top time in 59:16. He was followed by Michael O’Grady of Club Smart Ass in 1:07:21. Third went to Terry Loftus in 1:08:49

Harvey Nelson, in his own category for men 70 and over, finished in 1:17:42.

Several Whistler athletes also took part in The Yeti this year. In the men’s open category Martin Pardhoe was seventh in 55:52, followed by James Hallisey in 57:40.

Marla Zucht was sixth overall in the women’s open category with her time of 1:02:00.

Greg McDougall was 11 th in the men’s masters category with a time of 1:22:57.

In the co-ed 5 km race, the top time belonged to Derek Oelmann in 30:42. He was followed by Janine Duprey in 32:52 and Marcus Wong in 34:29.

Whistler’s Sara Bryanton took part in that race, finishing eighth overall with a time of 45:32.
