Two hundred boys and girls of all ages and abilities are expected back this year to kick off the Whistler Youth Soccer Club’s 2001 season on May 5, with spring start-up activities at Myrtle Philip and Whistler Secondary fields.

"The spring startup is just a way to get all the kids back together," says club director Bob Calladine. "It’s sort of like a split shift – the winter comes and everyone goes skiing, then the snow melts and the kids pick up where they left off in October."

Dozens of kids have come up all the way through the club since it started, and as a result the club is getting bigger every year. "Every season we add an older team, everybody moves up, and a bunch of new players come in at the kindergarten level," says Caladine.

The league could be even bigger if there were enough coaches to go around.

New players are welcome, but coaches may have to limit the number of players they can take based on the number of returning players, returning coaches and the free time available.

Teams play games against kids from Pemberton and Mount Currie, and exhibition games against teams from North Vancouver and North Burnaby are being arranged for the older players.

Senior kindergarten (K2) and Grade One players will meet at the Myrtle Philip upper field from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 will meet on the lower fields from 10 a.m. to noon. Grade 6 players will meet at the lower field from noon to 2 p.m.

Grades 7 and 8 will meet at Whistler Secondary from 10 a.m. until noon, and Grade 9 and 10 players have the field from noon to 2 p.m. If you have any questions or can’t make it, contact your coach to get on the roster.
