An Under 16 hockey team made up of players from around the province, including one player from Whistler, placed second in the Nagano Memorial Cup last week. Despite a loss to a Japanese team in their second game, a win against Russia put Team B.C. in second place at the international tournament, held to mark the 10 th anniversary of the 1998 Olympic Winter Games and 100 th anniversary of the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Whistler’s Matt Bonin, a bantam age forward playing with the Winterhawk’s Midget A team, made the 18-member B.C. team after his performance at a recent Zone tryout. In March, Bonin will play on the Zone 5 team against other regions in the province in the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association’s Under 16 tournament.

The previous week, the Whistler Pee Wee Rep team won the Pee Wee A and B division of the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey League. During regular season, the Winterhawks played 20 games against 10 teams from the Lower Mainland, and racked up a record of 14 wins, three losses and three ties. Next up for the team is the provincial championship in Chase B.C. from Mar. 16-20.
