West Shore RCMP fined four drivers for excessive speeding this week and impounded all of their vehicles for seven days.

A driver behind the wheel of a Ford 150 pickup who was clocked doing 140 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/h zone on the Trans-Canada Highway near Burnside Road in View Royal was also found to be impaired by drugs and issued a 24-hour suspension.

Police said the driver admitted to consuming cannabis prior to driving and failed a standard field sobriety test.

RCMP also clocked a Toyota Corolla going 143 km/h in an 80 km/hr zone on the Malahat in the 3900-block of the Trans Canada Highway.

Another excessive-speeding ticket was issued to a driver of a Chevy Silverado pickup in the 3600-block of Sooke Road for going 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

The driver of a Ford Focus was also pinched for going 140 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

All of the drivers were issued violation tickets for excessive speeding in addition to the vehicles being towed and impounded for seven days — a total the RCMP say cost each of them upwards of $1,500.

In B.C., the Motor Vehicle Act defines excessive speeding as driving at a speed greater than 40 km/h over the speed limit.

If caught, drivers can be ticketed and the vehicle towed and impounded for a minimum of seven days for first time offenders and 30 days for repeat offenders.

If drivers exceed the limit by more than 40 km/h, it’s a $368 fine and three penalty points added to a driving record.
