Wildfire near Chetwynd reduces Highway 97 to single-lane traffic

Evacuation order in effect due to Wildmare Creek fire

A wildfire south of Chetwynd has restricted Highway 97 to single-lane traffic to allow fire crews to fight the fire.

The Wildmare Creek fire is between Stone Creek subdivision and Kurjata subdivision 325 and stretches for 9.5 km (from four to 14 kilometres south of Chetwynd).

The Peace River Regional District issued an evacuation order forcthe area which was rescinded to an evacuation alert Thursday at 11 a.m..

The Wildmare Creek wildfire poses a threat to human life and the order requires everyone to evacuate immediately if you are in the following area: directly west of Bisset Creek, south to the Pine River, east to Wildmare Creek. That includes all properties on the north side of the highway.

An Evacuation Alert in the Pine River is also in effect. Anyone in the affected area must be ready to leave on short notice.

BC Wildfire Service ground crews continue to respond with aviation support.

Local RCMP and the Chetwynd Fire Department are undertaking a tactical evacuation for residences in the immediate area. Based on current conditions and fire behaviour, the BC Wildfire Service is working together with the Peace River Regional District and District of Chetwynd to protect public life and safety.

The 76-hectare human-caused fire was reported Wednesday at 3:42 p.m. RCMP said it started in the Dokkie subdivision.

Highway 97 was closed in both directions until Thursday morning. According to Drive BC, the highway is now open to single-lane traffic with a pilot-vehicle escort.
