Pedestrians in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside walk by the spot where a person died after being struck by a car that had been involved in a collision on Oct. 19, 2023.

One person is dead following a vehicle collision in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The incident happened Thursday, Oct. 19, around 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of Columbia and East Hastings streets.

It started when two cars collided in the intersection; the crash caused the driver of one of the cars to veer out of control and jump the curb on the northwest side of the intersection.

A pedestrian at the entrance to Vancity Corner Store was struck and the vehicle smashed into the building.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says the pedestrian died at the scene after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

Both drivers involved in the collision in the intersection remained at the scene. East Hastings was closed for a period but has since re-opened.

VPD spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison tells V.I.A. the identity of the victim has not been confirmed by police.

Police are now collecting witness statements and videos from the area.

Anyone who has footage or information is asked to contact the VPD at 604-717-3012.
