A driver experiencing a medical emergency crashed his pickup truck into the stairwell of a Langford apartment building off Millstream road on Sunday morning.

Langford Assistant Fire Chief Simon Chadwick said first responders arrived around 11 a.m. and helped to extricate the driver and a passenger from the pickup truck.

The driver was transported to hospital, he said.

Photos and videos show a red Dodge pickup truck with its front portion inside the five-storey apartment building at 697 Hoylake Ave. off Millstream Road.

The building was deemed structurally sound and the truck was removed from the scene by 2:30 p.m, Chadwick said.

A woman who lives in the building, who asked that her name not be used, was doing a crossword puzzle a few apartment units away when the crash happened.

“All of a sudden, there’s a loud bang and the building shakes,” she said. “I’m still kind of trying to get over it.”

The building has been buzzing with activity since the crash, she said.

Emergency responders have turned over control of the scene to building management.

A person who answered the Hoylake Apartments office phone said they had no comment on the incident.

Last December, a car crashed into the Loghouse Pub located a short distance away from Hoylake Apartments at the intersection of Treanor Avenue and Millstream Road.

Two people were injured and a patio wall was badly damaged.
