Amidst housing shortages sweeping the Sea to Sky area, the SLRD is conducting an analysis on the matter.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District will analyze current and emerging housing needs with community workshops, online surveys and interviews, among other things, it announced in a statement on Aug. 20.
It's part of an ongoing study about housing demands in its rural areas that's been ongoing since July.
"This project is not only timely, but also extremely important to future planning for the district," SLRD board chair, Tony Rainbow, said in a press release.
"The regional district has experienced growth pressures and escalating housing costs in recent years, which has led to a lack of available affordable housing. Anecdotally, we hear of families—and professionals—having to leave the region due to a lack of housing, which leads to many challenges, including a worker shortage. The SLRD is excited to partner with Urban Matters to deliver a study that will benefit the overall health of rural communities within the regional district."
The study is funded by the province's Rural Dividend Fund, and aims to inform regional planning with area-specific solutions.
This fall, the community workshops will be held in each electoral area, discussing an overview, other regions' successes and encouraging public input.
