An outbreak of COVID-19 on the fourth floor of North Vancouver's Lions Gate Hospital claimed the lives of a dozen patients.

A dozen Lions Gate Hospital patients died in the latest COVID-19 outbreak that lasted more than a month.

Since symptoms first appeared in patients on the fourth floor on Nov. 18, there were 59 confirmed cases, according to Vancouver Coastal Health. Of those, 31 were patients and 28 were staff. All 12 deaths were among patients.

“We would like to share our deepest condolences with the families, friends and loved ones impacted by this outbreak,” a statement from VCH read.

The outbreak was declared over on Dec. 24 and hospital staff began lifting restrictions that had been put in place.

The only other active outbreak on the North Shore is at West Vancouver’s Capilano Care Centre where, as of Dec. 11, 75 residents at the facility had tested positive for the coronavirus since the outbreak was declared Nov. 9. Twenty-four of them had died.

VCH has since begun on-site vaccinations of care home residents at six facilities, and care home and acute care hospital staff have been eligible for vaccines since Dec. 15.

As of Dec. 19, there have been 2,038 cases of coronavirus reported in the North Shore-Coast Garibaldi health area.
