B.C. Transit said Thursday 98% of its employees have confirmed they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Transit issued a mandatory proof-of-vaccination policy Oct. 8, requiring its drivers, mechanics and staff, as well as those working for B.C. Transit’s operating companies and contractors, to have two doses of vaccine by Nov. 29.

B.C. Transit employs just over 1,000 people, including about 550 bus drivers in Greater Victoria’s regional system.

The organization has 15 operating companies that also provide services and several contractors.

B.C. Transit said it is not disclosing specific information on numbers of employees placed on leave in order to respect the privacy of those involved. The organization also isn’t providing a specific breakdown of its operating companies in order to protect their employees’ privacy.

“We have been working hard to implement [the] policy and address any questions employees have,” B.C. Transit said in a statement. “We’ve provided clear instructions to employees on how to submit proof and held several in-person sessions for employees wanting to provide visual proof of vaccination.”
