REGINA — Saskatchewan's chief electoral officer is recommending the Oct. 26 provincial election go ahead as planned, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michael Boda says he sent a letter to Premier Scott Moe saying there is no reason the election shouldn't proceed from both a public health and operational perspective.
Boda says he based his conclusion partly on advice from an advisory group consisting of Saskatchewan's chief medical health officer, government house leader and Opposition house leader.
A statement from Moe's office says the premier is confident Elections Saskatchewan is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of voters.
Boda announced his decision about the same time the official Opposition trumpeted a campaign pledge to boost child care.
NDP Leader Ryan Meili says, if elected, his party would introduce $25-a-day child care and 2,200 new child-care spaces a year to meet growing demand.
