Police say they are looking for a potential witness as they continue to investigate a suspected animal attack in eastern Ontario that left a young child with serious injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police say they are investigating the incident in Quadeville, Ont., after the injured child was found along Quadeville Road around 12:30 a.m. on June 24.

They say the child was taken to hospital and then to a regional trauma centre, and remains in serious but stable condition.

Investigators are now seeking the public's assistance in identifying a man in his 60s who was in the Quadeville area before the incident and who may have information that could assist them.

Police suspect an animal attack but say further testing is still needed, and they continue to urge people in the community to keep a close eye on their small children.

Police say animal traps have been set in the Quadeville area as a precautionary measure and the OPP crime unit is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources to determine what happened .
