Provincial police are urging residents of an eastern Ontario community to keep a close eye on their small children after a suspected animal attack left a young child with serious injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police say they are investigating the incident in Quadeville, Ont., after the injured child was found along Quadeville Road around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

They say the child was taken to hospital and then to a regional trauma centre, and is recovering from the injuries.

Investigators suspect an animal attack, but police say further testing and analysis is still needed.

Police say the OPP crime unit is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources to determine what happened.

In the meantime, police are asking parents in the area to keep their small children indoors or "under close supervision" as a precaution.
