'It’s time for me to write a new chapter': Vancouver chef announces restaurant closure

Last call is just around the corner

A well-respected Vancouver chef who launched his latest restaurant venture back in 2022 in South Granville has revealed he will be shuttering the business soon.

Andrey Durbach announced the impending closure of Impostori Trattoria, a modern Italian restaurant at 3121 Granville St in a personal message on the restaurant's social media account Tuesday, May 7.

The restaurant had been listed for sale for several weeks.

"Over the past few weeks and months, some circumstances have arisen in my life that have given me cause for thought and reflection. After some consideration, I’ve decided to accept an offer I received for Impostori," shares Durbach in the post.

"After 40 years of standing in kitchens, 28 years of ownership at nine restaurants, and innumerable stints as chef, it’s time for me to step out from behind the stoves, explore some different avenues, and pursue some different goals," continues Durbach.

Durbach is best known for his cooking at past Vancouver spots like La Buca, Parkside, and Sardine Can, among others. On the Island, Durbach spent time in Courtenay to open Il Falcone.

In 2022, he took over the former Rise Eatery location in South Granville to create Impostori with wine pro Gordon Ritchie.

Impostori was known for its vibrant decor, hangout atmosphere, and menu of approachable Italian-inspired fare and wine.

"Over the years I’ve been privileged to have met some wonderful people through my restaurants, and to have made some lifelong friendships; I value the relationships built with my guests, staff, purveyors, and peers above all," says Durbach.

"Now it’s time for me to write a new chapter, and I hope to contribute to the dynamic, ever-evolving hospitality sector in Vancouver in a different way."

To that end, Impostori will serve its last dinner on Saturday, June 8, with a final and festive farewell lunch on Sunday, June 9.

"A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped make all my ventures and adventures possible over the decades—all my staff, my friends in the wine business, all the chefs who’ve come through my kitchens, those in the media who have supported me, my fellow chefs and restauranteurs who have inspired and instructed me, my friends and family who have lived this journey with me, and especially all my guests who have supported me so well for so long," shares Durbach.
