Whistler local and 2010 Olympic ski racer Britt Janyk Tilston is in Beijing this February, working as an alpine skiing analyst for Olympic Broadcasting Services for a third consecutive Winter Games. She's sharing a behind-the-scenes look at some of her day-to-day experiences on the ground at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre and some advice for competitors:
"Obviously here the restrictions and protocols are tight.. masks everyday and PCR tests daily along with logging in a daily health check. But once on the field of play everything feels familiar and I think that's what is important. For the athletes, I think it will be really important to just focus on what feels familiar and keep that energy... There's so much that is outside of our control... [so] manage the controllables; that's the approach at every race and stays the same here.
"My hotel is about 45 minutes from the Alpine venue, it's a Club Med!! The bus systems for media and such are well put together and for what I need, it's easy to get around.
"I can get a good cappuccino at my hotel... but no fancy oat milk lattes. I've been going to the gym daily; you book in, it's a big space and I'm thankful that it is open."
