A foot in both worlds
Richard Gossett, a psychotherapist and practicing shaman, is in Whistler this weekend to present a workshop on using drum techniques to learn to walk between the world of spirit and the world we all live in.
There are certain shamanic techniques found in all cultures, like using some type of sonic driving device for trance induction, usually a drum or a rattle. With the drum’s help, the shaman journeys to the spirit world to work on behalf of his or her community.
Journeying is one of the oldest spiritual tools we know of and is easily learned and used. Gossett is a member of the Svaha Spirit Lodge, a shamanic community in the Pacific Northwest.
During this daylong experience you will learn to journey to the Spirit World and return, retrieve your totem or power animal there and retrieve one for a buddy or a friend.
The workshop is Sunday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Summit Lodge. The fee is $45.
Tapley’s Halloween
Halloween is just around the corner and volunteers at Tapley’s Farm are already preparing for this howling good event. For those not planning to trick or treat in their own neighbourhoods, Tapley’s provides a safe and fun evening.
Thanks to the continued support of residents, businesses and organizations in the community, children in Whistler continue to enjoy this Halloween tradition. The streets will be closed to traffic from dusk until about 7.30 p.m. to make it safe for the trick or treaters.
Fireworks will be held afterwards in the field behind Myrtle Philip School.
Many of the 100 Tapley’s Farm houses participate in a best decorated house contest and each household will give away candy to over 600 children.
Candy donations are being accepted until Oct. 28 at the following drop-offs in the community: Myrtle Philip School office (during school hours), The Whistler Children’s Centre, and at 6388 Easy Street, home of organizer Sabine Bell. For more information, please call Bell at 604-932-6065.
Award for Excellence
Young jazz musicians are invited to apply for the RBC Financial Group Award for Excellence in Jazz.
The award is a new initiative created by the RBC Financial Group, the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society and the Fraser MacPherson Music Scholarship Fund in collaboration with the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Young instrumentalists up to the age of 25 are eligible for one of two annual $2,000 scholarships. The award aims to inspire young musicians to attain the level of some of British Columbia’s finest jazz musicians, including Diana Krall, Renee Rosnes, Hugh Fraser, Brad Turner and Seamus Blake.
The RGC Financial Group Award for Excellence in Jazz will be administered through the Fraser MacPherson Music Scholarship Fund, which has distributed scholarships since 1995. Application forms are available from the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society Web site www.coastaljazz.ca . The deadline is November 2002 and winners will be announced in mid-January 2003.
What: Down by the Docks Feed the Kids Tour

The children’s entertainers, Down by the Docks have arranged these concerts with the support of the food banks. Tickets to the shows are to be exchanged for an item of food. Daryl, Shantelle and Leroy the Lobster will be recording their third CD this month, complete with exciting fun new songs.
