Gladyss Patches, the Vancouver rap and rock band, are being hailed as the next thing in rock.

You’ll get a heavy sound, with tunes from A Wish This Simple , their debut album on America label NFE. Previously the band released two albums independently, Tijuana Crack Whore , and Novelty in 1999.

Consistently compared to Nickelback by magazines like Chart and rockrage.com, the band was discovered while playing the Troubadour in L.A.

The lineup has evolved from a three- to five-piece band which includes Renz on vocals, Mike Hooton on guitar, Alex Roque on vocals and guitar, Jordan Sokolowski on drums, and Brad Laviolette on bass.

The band brings what they call "delicate and destructive" lyrics on this album.

Lead singer Renz always lists harmonies as a strong undercurrent in their music. He looks to influences such as Prince and Chino from Deftone, while Hooton’s influences are primarily rap.

The band combines rock and rap with some hip hop vibes to create their sound, typified by songs like Vanishing, re-mixed by Tim Palmer, a veteran of U2 and Pearl Jam productions.

But finding the origins of the band’s name requires some sleuthing.

Renz has been variously quoted as naming the band after an Irish porn star and after two cats, Gladyss and Patches.

More answers lie within the new record.

Their new songs also appear on the EA Sports’ Triple Play 2001 Game.

Slick 60 is the opening act, with songs from their latest album, Burden of Silence . It’s a follow up to 1998’s Pay To Play . Singles include Never-U-Mind and Pale. The lineup is Derek Zabet on vocals, Don Sojka on guitar, Greg Bruce on drums, and Jay Tregaskis on bass.
