What: 2 nd annual Juried Photo Exhibit
Who: Whistler Photographic Society
Where: MY Place
When: the month of March
For a photographer, choosing a favourite photo must be a painstaking process. One would assume it would be like choosing your favourite child. But thats exactly the challenge that was bestowed upon Whistlers finest lens men and women for the Whistler Photographic Societys second annual juried exhibition, now hanging on the walls of Millennium Place for the rest of the month.
Seventeen local professional and amateur photographers made the final cut, including Randy Lincks, Bonny Makarewicz, and Dean Cote, in an exhibit designed to showcase the wealth and diversity of talent in the area.
"The response last year for our first exhibit was overwhelming," said chair of the WPS, Leanna Rathkelly. "This year, there were more photographers wanting to participate than we had wall space available. In response, we created a juried exhibition."
The judges, advertising and marketing specialists in the business community, spent hours sifting and sorting through more than 70 submissions. Eventually they agreed on the top 35.
This years exhibit had no theme but considering the area these photographers work and play in, most photos fell into the realm of action-sports, nature, architecture and mountain culture. From wild mushrooms, to twinkling stars. Colourful salmon swimming in streams and little kids being cute this presentation has it all.
As for the calibre of artists, one just needs to look at the portfolios of only a smidgen of the finalists to see the competition is fierce. Greg Eymundson has worked extensively for Warren Miller, Roots, and Intrawest. Hes had his work published in National Geographic, SkiCanada and loads of resort magazines. Amateur photographer Dean Cotes work can be found regularly in a stall during the summers Farmers Market, and his exhibitions around town are guaranteed crowd pleasers. Randy Lincks is a freelance photographer and film maker with 18 years of professional experience under his belt. His work is published in a myriad of prominent publications and advertising campaigns world-wide. Photojournalist Bonny Makarewicz has her photos published in the Vancouver Sun and Province, the National Post, the Globe and Mail and the London Telegraph, to name but a few.
So get on down to MY Place for an exhibit that will impress and inspire.
