New winter art market aims for monthly show

What:

Whistler’s Legacy of Art

Where:

Millennium Place

When:

Feb. 9, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Metalwork and beaded jewelry will be part of the eye candy on sale at the first Whistler’s Legacy of Art, on display Feb. 9 at Millennium Place.

Art and culture are sometimes overlooked in the face of pure adrenaline sports, which go hand in hand with a Canadian outdoors resort, but that is changing.

"Whistler is fairly new, and when visitors arrive (everything looks new to them as well), but there is a history of art and culture in town," says Tess, one of the co-organizers of the art market. "The Farmer’s market is so successful, and we hope to make this a bi-monthly event."

Together with her partner Korey they have identified what they see as a gap in the local market.

"We thought ‘Why don’t we have something here through the season?’ And locals were asking about an art type of market in the wintertime. So many tourists come through as well, and they really like to buy something local… something that is Whistler," says Tess.

From a communications background, Tess made the switch from two dimensional art (photography) to three-dimensional (jewelry making).

"There was a bead shop here four years ago, and through that I really got into the jewelry-making. Most of my photos were more artistic in nature, less of the sports aspect," she says.

Fifteen artists have signed up for the first Legacy of Art market, with table rental fees at $35. The show organizers aim for 20 tables in total. Visual artists from Whistler, Pemberton and Mount Currie will be displaying at the art market.
