BC Hydro has installed a new electric vehicle charging unit in Whistler.

“The charging location in Whistler will help make public charging more convenient as a growing number of people in the Sea-to-Sky region make the switch to electric vehicles,” said Bruce Ralston, Minster of Energy, Mines and Low-Carbon Innovation, in a press release.

The unit was added to the underground parking lot charging site at the Whistler Conference Centre on July 19. That site opened back in 2016 with one unit.

Both of the 50-kilowatt chargers add about 50 kilometres of driving to an average electric vehicle in about 10 minutes.

“As the primary fuel supplier for electric vehicles, we are building out charging infrastructure to ensure we can accommodate the volume and variety of electric vehicles that will be on B.C. roads in the coming years,” said Chris O’Riley, president and CEO of BC Hydro, in a release. “BC Hydro will add 325 charging units to its network at 145 sites within the next five years.”
